Arsenal’s journey to reclaim the Premier League title has been filled with near misses, most notably losing out to Manchester City in the past two seasons. Despite significant improvements last season, the North Londoners fell short, with their hopes of silverware dashed during a crucial three-day period in April, when defeats to Aston Villa and Bayern Munich ended their Premier League and European ambitions.

Mikel Arteta, however, has had ample time to reflect and has been meticulously planning for the upcoming season, aiming to finally topple Pep Guardiola’s side. Unlike previous transfer windows, Arsenal has been relatively quiet this summer. With 89 Premier League points to their name last season, it suggests that major changes were not necessary.

Whether Arsenal has enough to go all the way this season is still up for debate. Yet, it’s clear that barring any unforeseen circumstances, they will be in contention until the very end.

Optimism Surrounds the Emirates

As an Arsenal fan, it’s hard not to feel optimistic about the upcoming season. Arteta has revitalized the club, transforming the men’s team and restoring Arsenal’s status among Europe’s elite. This resurgence has also breathed new life into the Emirates Stadium, now one of the most intimidating venues in the Premier League, thanks to the club’s efforts to enhance the atmosphere.

While there are few reasons for concern, one notable issue is the departure of homegrown talent like Emile Smith Rowe and Chido Obi-Martin during the summer. Many fans wish Arteta would take more chances on academy graduates, but with the team performing so well, this is a minor gripe.

Transfer Activity

Arsenal’s only major signing so far has been Riccardo Calafiori, acquired for £42 million ($54m) after an impressive Euro 2024 with Italy. Although the move may seem short-sighted, Arsenal has been tracking the Bologna defender for some time, expecting him to solve their left-back dilemma, which saw various players fill the role last season.

With David Raya’s loan move becoming permanent, Calafiori remains Arsenal’s only significant addition. However, there is speculation that Mikel Merino could soon join him at the Emirates. The Real Sociedad midfielder would offer a unique skill set to Arteta’s squad.

Rumors also suggest that Arsenal is in the market for another attacker, with Bukayo Saka having played a lot of football over the past few years. Finding the right backup for Saka, while adhering to Premier League squad registration (PSR) rules, has proven challenging.

On the departure front, Mohamed Elneny, Arthur Okonkwo, and Cedric Soares have left on free transfers, while Albert Sambi Lokonga, Nuno Tavares, and Karl Hein are set to spend another season out on loan. The most significant departure is Emile Smith Rowe, whose exit to Fulham was met with sadness but understanding from the fanbase. He will likely receive a warm welcome when he returns to the Emirates with Fulham this season.

Pre-Season Preparations

Arsenal’s pre-season has shown promise, despite several first-team regulars missing large portions of the summer due to European Championship and Copa America commitments. The Gunners embarked on a pre-season tour of the United States, where they drew with Bournemouth, defeated Manchester United, and lost to Liverpool, both by 2-1 scorelines. They capped off their pre-season by thrashing Bayer Leverkusen 4-1 and lifting the Emirates Cup after a 2-0 victory over Lyon.

The emergence of Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri as potential first-team options has been a highlight of pre-season, while Gabriel Jesus appears to be regaining his best form. Calafiori also made an impressive debut in the win against Lyon.

Tactical Innovations

Mikel Arteta’s tactical philosophy is centered around “dominance,” a strategy built on controlling possession, maintaining a solid defensive base, and increasing tempo in the final third. Despite his commitment to this approach, Arteta has continued to innovate, particularly in midfield. With or without Mikel Merino, questions remain about Arsenal’s best midfield combination. Declan Rice excelled in a more attacking role last season, meaning Thomas Partey or Jorginho will likely anchor the midfield, with Martin Odegaard on the right.

Up front, Kai Havertz’s form has reduced the urgency to sign a new center-forward, but Gabriel Jesus will be pushing for more starts now that he appears fully fit. The return of Jurrien Timber from injury and the arrival of Calafiori add depth and versatility to the backline, offering Arteta more tactical options.

Key Player: Martin Odegaard

While any long-term injury to Bukayo Saka would be devastating, Martin Odegaard remains the most critical player in Arteta’s system. The Norwegian captain is the heartbeat of the team, orchestrating play from deep and delivering incisive passes to unlock defenses. Arteta has praised Odegaard’s impact and leadership, and there is a sense that the best is yet to come from the midfielder.

Potential Breakout Star: Jurrien Timber

After a devastating injury on the opening day of last season, Jurrien Timber is back and ready to make his mark. The Dutch defender was a standout performer during pre-season and could play a pivotal role this campaign, especially with Calafiori’s arrival adding competition for places. Timber’s composure on the ball, pace, and tactical intelligence make him an ideal fit for Arteta’s system.

Defining Success

Arteta has succeeded in winning over fans in recent seasons, but now it’s time to deliver the Premier League title. This season may represent Arteta’s last chance to outmaneuver his former mentor, Pep Guardiola, with the Manchester City manager potentially leaving at the end of the campaign. Should Guardiola depart, Arsenal would likely be favorites for the title in 2026, but Arteta is determined to dethrone him before then.

Matching last season’s 89 points will be challenging, but if Arsenal can maintain that level of performance and capitalize on any slip-ups from City, they could finally end their wait for Premier League glory. Additionally, Arsenal must show more composure in the Champions League and take domestic cup competitions seriously, as fans are eager for any silverware after a four-year drought.

Bold Predictions for the Season

  • Player of the Season: Martin Odegaard is poised to win the club’s top award for a third consecutive season, continuing to be the linchpin of Arsenal’s success.
  • Biggest Disappointment: Ethan Nwaneri may struggle to get significant minutes, making him a potential disappointment despite his promise.
  • Best Signing: Riccardo Calafiori is expected to be Arsenal’s standout signing, filling a crucial role in the defense.
  • Top Scorer: Bukayo Saka, who plays nearly every minute and takes penalties, is likely to lead the team in goals.
  • European Fate: Arsenal could once again fall short in the Champions League quarter-finals, as they continue to find their footing in European competition.
  • League Position: Arsenal is tipped to finish 1st, finally ending their wait for Premier League glory after a close battle with Manchester City.
