Gabriel Martinelli’s participation in Brazil’s Copa America opener against Costa Rica is in doubt after the Arsenal forward was seen hobbling out of a training session. A video shared by TNT Sports shows Martinelli struggling after a clash with Real Madrid defender Eder Militao while contesting a cross.

Initially, Militao attempted to help Martinelli to his feet, but Brazil’s medical staff had to intervene to assist the 23-year-old off the field. The footage clearly shows Martinelli in significant discomfort, writhing on the ground, while his Arsenal teammate Gabriel Magalhaes looked on with concern.

Brazil has been under pressure following their quarter-final exit from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar at the hands of Croatia. Martinelli is considered a crucial player for both the current squad and future prospects under coach Dorival Junior.

Earlier this year, Martinelli had to withdraw from Brazil’s friendlies against England and Spain in March due to a foot injury sustained during Arsenal’s 6-0 victory over Sheffield United. Despite this setback, he ended the season strongly and was included in Brazil’s 26-man squad for the upcoming Copa America.

The squad also features high-profile players such as Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson, Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, and Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. Gabriel Magalhaes secured his spot after an impressive season at Arsenal, though Gabriel Jesus missed out following a disappointing league campaign.

Martinelli has been vying for a starting position ahead of Brazil’s opening match against Costa Rica, scheduled to take place at Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium on June 25. His availability for the game remains uncertain due to the injury.

Brazil finished second to Argentina in the 2021 Copa America, with Angel Di Maria scoring the decisive goal in the final at Rio de Janeiro’s Maracana Stadium. Ahead of this year’s tournament, Martinelli expressed optimism about Brazil’s chances.

“We have every chance of winning the Copa America,” Martinelli told AS. “Everyone knows the weight of this shirt; we are the best team in the world. People recognize the quality of our players. We have many young talents who have elevated our team’s level.”

He also spoke about playing alongside Real Madrid stars Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo. “They are high-quality players. In the dressing room, we trust and believe in them a lot. We know that at any moment they can change the course of a match. Even they understand their importance and the responsibility they carry. People are proud to play alongside them.

“We have a lot of confidence heading into the Copa America because we have two bright, young players in our squad,” Martinelli added.
